simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can Recycler : Can a trash can really be so great? Yep!

Great can and clever dog proof, too. Like many other reviewers, i agree that it really is an amazing trash can worth the money if you’re into that kind of thing. I want to focus this review on the dog-proof-ness of this can, since it was a major consideration for my purchase. We foster dogs so we have a rotating cast of (usually very intelligent and troublemaking) dogs coming through our home, and we like to know they’ll be unable to get into the trash when unsupervised. None are smart enough to figure out the step feature, so you’re safe there. All our cans in the past had a lid that the dog could push up with their nose and then awkwardly grab something if the bag was near full; or they could knock the can over. This can doesn’t have a lid they can do anything with, because it’s flush with the lip around the whole can – see attached photo. (side note: this feature also makes it very difficult for humans to lift the lid without using the step, unless you have long fingernails. )it’s also pretty heavy and if you just put the wheeled part (the back of the can) against something (wall, counter) then there’re no way for them to push it either. The wheels also won’t really work unless you pick up the front of the can a bit too.

The bags fit like a glove, but i could also use some leftover 13-gallon (standard kitchen size) bags quite easily because simplehuman added a ‘bag holder hole’ into the liner-bin so you can push the excess through and have a nice, snug fit. I am giving 4 stars rather than 5 because there is a glaring design deficiency, in my opinion. When i take out the trash, i do not pull out the bag and carry trash through my living quarters to the door and out to the receptacle. Rather, i pull out the entire inner liner and carry that out. The problem here is that there is no comfortable way to carry the inner liner. The rim is sharply-cut plastic and below that a smooth wall. Very awkward to carry and a couple of handles or handle cutouts would have made all the difference. My four-year-old granddaughter recently stayed over and helped take the recycle to the bin.

Outstanding quality, attractive and good size. The only to make this better would be to manufacture it in the us. I hesitated choosing this product because if the price, but am so glad i bought it. This is a quality, we’ll-designed, heavy duty kitchen trash can. The metal and plastic used is thick and sturdy. Every piece is designed to fit snugly together to maximize the disposal areas while reducing the overall footprint. The shapes of the containers will hold significant sizes and amounts of trash. This was also a concern of mine since i was transitioning from a 30 gallon, hand crafted receptacle. The foot lever to open the lid has little to no slack so very little pressure will smoothly open the lid. I love that the lid slowly lowers itself down to close (silence) and that there is a lever that will also hold it open.

Best available, but not perfect. Update:after a year of use in a busy household, i appreciate the build quality of this canister more now than i did when new. I did a thorough cleaning of the unit, and it has withstood daily use very well: the stainless steel is thick enough to not have been dented anywhere at all and the lid-raising mechanism remains solid. As i said previously, i still wish the individual compartments were larger, and this is still the biggest drawback to the canister. Original review:this trash/recycler is a well-built, sturdy addition to the kitchen. In terms of build quality, i have no complaints. However, when it comes to form factor, i would prefer a 20%-30% size increase for each of the trash/recycling compartments. Simplehuman’s sample bags fit great and work well, but realistically i’m not going to buy special bags — i’m going to use the box of 9,000 kitchen bags that i already have. If each compartment were wider and slightly deeper, then i wouldn’t be wasting so much of each standard size bag each time, and there would be more time between bag changes. Each household is different, but i found it best to use the big side for recycling and the little side for trash.

Sleek trash can but requires special bags to fit perfectly. I love the trash can – extremely sleek, fits our small space well and doesn’t look like a nasty trash can. The other reviews made me giggle – it is absurd to spend this much on a trash can and do this much research. You want your kitchen to look nice. The only reason i don’t give this 5 stars is the fact that the recycle part is so small, i don’t have a bag that will really fit it. It comes with a few sample bags that are made for the trash can, but i won’t be spending that much money just to have bags that fit perfectly. A regular trash bag works for the trash can side. Not sure what i am going to use for the recycle side yet.

simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can Recycler, Stainless Steel, Plastic Lid, 46 L / 12 Gal : Worth the price to help recycle easier. Who wants to spend this much on a garbage can?. I did not want to but i can tell you that every ti,e i open it i am so glad we did. This makes it so much easier for us to recycle because of where our garbage cans are outside of our house, and so this eliminates lining bottles and recyclables on the counter for the next person to take out to the garbage or recycling can. Really happy with this purchase.

Fantastic solution to the issue of trash and recycling. Fantastic solution to the issue of trash and recycling. I love this trash can, just wish both containers were of equal size. We use the larger size for the recycle since now days most things are recycleable. When i first looked at the smaller side i thought i would have to change the trash bag everyday but it actually holds more than it looks like. I also like the plastic lid so i don’t have to constantly clean it and worry about dents, especially with grandkids. The spring mechanism on the lid is very well made also. When i received my order it was badly dented so i called simple human and they send a return label through e-mail and sent a replacement. Before my first purchase i had looked at the quality of different brands and simple human had them all beat.

I liked the idea of containing garbage and recycling together. However, the can is super expensive; it’s small and doesn’t hold a lot; and you have to buy custom for bags for it.

Beautiful trash and recycling bin in great size for smallish areas. Never thought i would buy such an expensive trash can. But have moved to a smaller home, where trash needs to be taken out more often, so the smaller recycling compartment is perfect for me. One slim item fits very nicely and out of the way in my smaller kitchen and makes it easier to get the trash out of the apartment and collect the recycling in one place, taking up much less space. This is sturdy, easy to open, slowly closes and has a latch for stay open operation. The bags tuck neatly inside and cannot be seen when the lid is closed. Understand there might be a newer model with a bigger floor pedal. I tried it at the store and did not see that much of an improvement over this model other than maybe looks. Sample packs of bags enclosed that fit very well.

Great trash can, serves double duty. Love that this is fingerprint proof, love that it has a separate recycling compartment. It has very nice features, like a handle in the back of the trash can where you can lift the whole thing up, it has wheels (although i’m not really sure they’re useful), it has a quiet close lid, it can be positioned flush against a wall, and it has a feature where you can set the lid to stay open in case you don’t want to be stepping on the foot pedal the entire time. I rated this four stars because although the trash can is large, it doesn’t really hold a lot of trash. I used to empty out my trash can every four days, and this one i have to empty out this one about every two days (mind you, it’s just 2 of us at home). Also, call me crazy, but i don’t want to spend the money on the simplehuman trash bags when i can buy so many more standard size trash bags at costco for a lot less. I realize that this results in the trash bag not being fully utilized because the trash can is so much smaller than a standard can. It looks like a huge trash can, but you don’t really have a lot of space for trash and even less space for recycling. Also, it’s kind of hard to pull the trash bags out of the trash cans. But, overall i am happy with this purchase, it looks great in my kitchen, the lid is quiet, and it serves a dual purpose.

Can with well designed and robust lid mechanism, handles garbage and recycling with medium capacities for both. This can is holding up well after six months of heavy usage. Pros:–outside dimensions are good for many kitchens–easy to clean, attractive stainless steel exterior. –precisely fitting inner tubs with a little thumb-space that allows a stock kirkland (costco) bag to be used. The thumb space allows for extra bag material to be bunched in place so the lid will close flush. –solid lid raising mechanism that works smoothly and carries a good warranty (unlike the wal-mart unit it replaced). –one bin, two functions, reduces clutter in kitchen. Cons:–both sides are arguably too small, though anything larger would not fit in most kitchens. We have considered (but not yet tried) swapping the recycle and trash sides). If you’re accustomed to a fifteen gallon stock can, the smaller capacity of both sides is a minor surprise–exorbitantly expensive replacement bags, though the costco kirkland tall kitchen bag, which are pennies on the dollar cheaper, can be used if excess bag material is carefully gathered and stuck into thumb recess.

High quality and a stylish garbage can. I debated for about a year to buy this and ended up buying it because of the recommendations and i wanted something that had the recycle and garbage together. The recycle bin is larger than the one i previously had in my house, and the garbage portion is just slightly smaller than our old can. I don’t use a bag for the recycle portion, and even though it fills up fast its easy to take in and out to empty it. Pros: it takes up less room than my other two bins, and it looks much better. I get compliments on the trash can when people come over and its funny to have people comment on a garbage can. It does a very good job at keeping the smell contained. I dont notice garbage smell any more when the lid is closed, when you open the lid you might smell it but once it is closed it keeps it contained very well. Its really sturdy feeling, and i like the that the clid closes quietly.

I love this trash and recycling can. I use the large side for recycling and the small side for trash. It fits nicely against my stove and takes up little room. I added a recycling symbol on the inside of the lid on the left side so people could determine where to put things. The recycling side has used only one bag in a year. I just dump it out and if it isn’t torn or dirty, leave the same bag in and reuse it. The trash side uses v size and i love that they fit perfectly. I use one bag a week here, so it costs me about $15/year in bags. Overall, i can’t rave about this can enough.

The recycling bin could have been made a. The recycling bin could have been made a little bigger though. Also, the price is a little ridiculous.

Not only is this product awesome – but when the lid clip broke. Not only is this product awesome – but when the lid clip broke, they replaced it under the warranty. It was super easy to replace, and really value companies that stand behind their products. When it came the shipping box was pretty beat up – but i took pictures before opening, and everything turned out fine. It’s the perfect size for a family of two and a dog (we use the bigger side for recycling).

Really good overall and functional – price could be better. This model has an actual trash can that can be removed, which i require. The newer/nicer/more attractive version just hangs the bag inside with no can. That doesn’t work for me because i like to pull out the can and put it in the middle of the kitchen while i cook for easy access. With this one i can do that, though i think this model is much less attractive. Mechanisms feel solid after a couple months use. The finish wipes back to new with only a moderate effort. The liners for the trash can are really high quality. The liners for the recycler are white which hides the blue part–this makes everyone confused as to which can is which because they both are white.

I was skeptical on the price, but i am now a believer. I have had this for about 3 years now, and not a spot of rust or a stratch on it. I use the larger side of recycling now, since this helped me learn to recycle more then what i throw away.

Looks great and matches well with stainless appliances. Two little wheels in the back were a nice surprise, there’s a little handle hole in the back of it to tip and roll it around. Another reviewer mentioned using the large area for recycling and the small one for garbage – that’s definitely good feedback, the recycling area is far too small for non-kitchen recycling like boxes and packaging. We’re going through bags like mad and using the uber-expensive simplehuman bags. Tried using econo bags, haven’t found snugly fitting ones yet, will post if we do. Using poorly sized bags in this can is an exercise in futility – you need the bag to fit snugly so it slides in and the bag doesn’t come off (over and over again). It’s also tricky to get the bins out when you need to change bags. They address it by having a finger hole at the top of each can in the back, so you stick your finger in the garbage and grip through that hole, then slide the can up. That’s a case of form over function – it looks darn slick, just has some goofy usability issues (i don’t like poking my finger in to coffee grounds).

A dream if you have kitchen ocd. This trashcan is an ocd sufferer’s dream. I hate having things cluttering my kitchen, especially when we’re talking about things i’m simply throwing stuff out in. When my new roommate announced he was a big recycler, i groaned. Not because i hate the environment, but because having two separate cans in my kitchen drives me insane. Even if they look the same, it’s two cans. So yes, you’re spending a lot, on a trash can/recycling bin combination, but it looks amazing, it closes quietly, and it manages to keep even the nastiest odors contained. (roommate also apparently loves to cook with some major spices. ) replacement bags can be costly, but i’ve owned this brand’s products before, and you can easily use off brand bags, especially because the unit comes with modifications to accommodate those bags.

I wasn’t sure if this would be worth the cost. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the product. We actually use the larger section for our recyclables and the smaller side for other items. Only slight negative is the need to order bags from manufacturer. You can use your own trash bags, but the custom fit ones are much easier. When i ran out if the bags sent with the trash can, i decided to re-order through simplehuman. Their website was very easy to navigate. Bags were not pricier than regular bags an arrived on my doorstep 3 days after ordering online. I ordered enough to last a few months, so no big deal or worries about running out.

Who knew i could love a trash can?. I’m another person who can’t believe , first, that i paid this much for a trash can and second, that i don’t regret it. I am glad i did not get the newer, even pricier , model that has bags but no internal containers because all garbage bags can leak, and then it would be a mess.
