Chef’n EcoCrock Counter Compost Bin – Nice Compost bin

Overall a nice bin, very attractive, solid and easy to use, holds odors well. I have always disliked reviews that complain about the size – it is clearly listed, but is it more difficult to get a good feel for this from the dimensions. The inner liner is (as it has to be to fit) a bit smaller then the outer container. At the bottom is round, about 4. The top is oval about 7′ x 5′. Even for one person it is just a little too small.

We use this just about every day, the plastic pale with handle inside is so handy, beats lugging the whole thing out to the yard. It’s easy to clean up unless you wait too long to empty it (done that). We have thrown it in the dishwasher for a good cleaning. The filter works great to keep down the odor even when we do get lazy.

This is a nice stylish container to put on your counter top to temporary store compostable scraps. The lid is easy to take on and off and it provides a good seal to keep fruit flies away. The charcoal liner is a nice addition to remove any odors that might be created if you don’t empty the container frequently :)the outer portion of the container is ceramic and the inner portion is plastic. I like that the pieces can be washed in the dishwasher if needed. The capacity of the container isn’t huge but it is a good size for our needs – i usually need to empty it every three or four days. Going any longer would probably be a bad idea anyway. Here are the specifications for the Chef’n EcoCrock Counter Compost Bin:

  • A drafted bucket shape allows food scraps to slide out without a mess or hassle. If preferable, a plastic bag can be placed inside the bucket as a liner.

  • Choose smart, easy-to-use kitchen utensils that are built on tasteful design, new technologies, and the trusted reputation of Chef’n.

This is the third countertop compost bin i have owned, and i wish that i had bought this the first time around. I have used a ceramic one that was difficult to empty, and eventually cracked and i had an aluminum one which eventually leaked. I love the design of my ecocrock, and having a removable inner bin to take out to my garden compost is so convenient; simply tip it in, rinse it out and return it to its ceramic shell. So much easier to clean than either of my previous bins. I have been using this for around a month now, and i have not needed to change the filter yet. My husband and i eat a lot of fruit and veg, so i’m emptying this out every 2 to 3 days, although since clean up is so easy, it really is not a big deal.

Looks very nice on the counter and has some good features. You can remove the lid easily by using the leaf as a handle. There was no smell coming out of this after 8 weeks of use. I asked if i could use biodegradable bags inside and based on replies i ordered this can. But, they hang out over the edge and look messy. I used a large rubber bag to hold down the edge of the bag, but it is really too tight of a fit. After 8 weeks there were maggots in the charcoal filter, probably because we overfilled the container. Glad we had a second filter and we will be careful not to let the food touch this one.

  • Nice Compost bin

This compost bin works great for me. I have had it for about 3wks. It looks great on my counter, the outside ceramic wipes clean easily and the pale is also easily dumped and cleaned. Maybe you if you left the stuff sit too long but i fill it up too soon for that to happen. What i dont like is having to lift the lid every time i need to put stuff in it. I will just have to get use to that. Also i wish it was a little bigger to hold more, but it holds a fair amount. Be aware its made in china, major bummer. I dont like buying products that are made in china. Desinger is a sell out from washington. I would definately recommend this compost bin for most anyone looking. Just wish it was made in the us.

It looks nice and cleans up well (as opposed to some of the stainless steel versions we’ve tried), but the lid just sits on the top of the bucket, so if you’re close to full, the lid doesn’t fit snugly and bugs can get in. We had the good ideas pail-boo bamboo compost pail before, and if i had it to do over again, i’d have gotten that one again. (it lasted three years before cracking, and had a much better seal on the lid.

I was looking for something modern and with clean lines. The bucket has a nice handle, and the kids are able to help out without getting too messy. I did not receive two filters in the package though – only one. It’s not really needed, and doesn’t really keep out strong odors (non of them do – you just have to empty every few days).

Finally a contemporary counter compost bin. I love this counter compost bin. It looks really cute on the counter. It’s well designed so that the green plastic oval liner pail slips nicely and easily into the white ceramic oval crock, both lidded or unlidded. The green leaf handle is easy to grab and looks great. The filter in the lid is an additional nice feature. The size is perfect and easy to carry outside. I looked for a contemporary styled compost pail for quite awhile before finally finding this one, which is better looking than the other one or two i found. Not everyone has a traditional or country styled kitchen.

I am so happy to have found a unique and modern compost bin. I really did not want something that looked like a trash can sitting on my counter. This container is beautifully designed. As for functionality, the removable interior is great and easy to clean. I have yet to smell anything coming from the bin, even having left food in it for days. I was also concerned about fruit flies, but i have yet to have any issues. Very happy with this purchase.

Doing the right thing, one scrap at a time. I’m a teacher and talk a lot with my students about doing the right thing. I was feeling pretty guilty about throwing egg shells, coffee grounds, and table scraps out in the general garbage. So, i’ve had my little compost bin now for a week and i’m loving it. The real acid test came when we had a string of really hot days. With the charcoal filter neatly tucked inside the lid, you’d never know that this little, non-intrusive device harbored such smelly stuff. It is slightly smaller than a gallon jug of milk, so it doesn’t take up a lot of counter space. I may only be throwing out a gallons-worth of scraps a week, but it’s the right thing to do no matter how small. I intend to buy more as gifts so that friends and family can do the same. Collectively, we’ll be doing our part one scrap at a time.

I got this to replace a ceramic compost bin that over the years had gotten bumped and banged around enough that i had broken both the lid and the handle off. I looked at the steal options and they seemed to leak or rust. I liked this one because it is white ceramic like the one i was replacing, and looks nice on the counter in the kitchen. A friend even commented on my ‘cute’ new compost bin. Inside is a green plastic bucket with handle that lifts out and is easy to dump into the compost outside. I like that the ceramic part stays safely inside thus hopefully extending it’s life. The lid is plastic so less likely to break when it gets dropped. I also like that the sides slope outward, so the compost slides out easily. On my last counter compost bin the sides sloped inward and stuff always stuck in the bottom.

Perfect on the counter compost collector. This looks good and does a great job catching stuff for us to take to the compost bin. Its the best of both worlds because is has a very nice crock exterior and a smooth plastic bucket interior. It is so handy to be able to grab the bucket handle & lift it right out to take stuff to the compost bin. The lid fits well, not super tight, but well enough to keep the fruit flies out. The charcoal filter in the vented top keeps any odors away. I got the extra filters with it because i knew, if it was worth keeping, i would be needing them especially through the summer. I got this especially for my daughter who is vegan and always has something that needs to go to the compost bin. I got tired of seeing the stuff on the counter in whatever container she had at hand. This little crock has been perfect for her.

Good for the kitchen work surface but possibly a little small. This is an excellent product for your kitchen work surface. The ceramic outside looks much nicer than plastic, but having the plastic inner is great, it’s easy to take out to empty and clean. This was what i was looking for, but i think that this product does have a couple of areas that could be improved on. Size: it is a little small – we have to empty it 2-3 times a week minimumthe lid: doesn’t sit as snugly as i would expect. It keeps all the odours in but it always looks like it s not on quite rightthese are minor points that, in my opinion, do not detract from the product or still usefulness.

We looked at a few different ones, but chose this one because the plastic bin inside comes out to take the junk to the compost barrel outside. It is also very heavy ceramic and that helps from easily knocking it over on the counter like our old plastic one. The filter seems to do its job too. I haven’t smelled any nastiness coming out yet. I can’t think of anything that is negative. Maybe if it was a little bigger, but theni would probably leave stuff in it too long rather than taking it out in a timely manner.
